Manufacturing Electrical Controls – Engineering Specialist
Guelph, ON, Canada
Full Time
Mid Level
Position Overview
Owens Corning is seeking a Manufacturing Electrical Controls Engineering Specialist to support electrical and controls systems in a continuous manufacturing environment. This role is hands on, with responsibility for stabilizing and sustaining manufacturing operations through strong technical execution, ownership, and close collaboration with operations and maintenance.
The position is part of a cross functional technical team with direct impact on plant performance. Work is dynamic and priorities can change, calling for strong fundamentals, sound judgment, and the ability to move issues forward independently. This role best suits someone motivated by accountability, practical problem solving, and building lasting improvements.
Why This Role Is Exciting
You will support critical production systems where decisions have clear and visible impact. Success leads to improved reliability, smoother recoveries, and systems that are easier for operations and maintenance to run with confidence.
This role provides the opportunity to shape reliability practices and technical standards, with scope and influence growing naturally through demonstrated ownership and results.
What Success Looks Like
Early success involves stabilizing electrical and controls systems, building credibility as a technical escalation point, and strengthening PLC and HMI programming skills through hands‑on application.
With time, the role evolves toward broader system ownership, reduced repeat issues, and improved technical standards, along with leading cross functional teams during recovery and improvement efforts through influence, clarity, and follow through.
Core Responsibilities
- Troubleshoot electrical and controls issues to restore safe and stable operation.
- Diagnose faults across PLC systems, HMIs, variable frequency drives, motors, sensors, instrumentation, panels, and MCC equipment.
- Implement targeted PLC and HMI updates to support reliability and operational needs.
- Balance planned improvement work with unplanned support as conditions change.
- Identify root causes and implement solutions that prevent repeat failures.
- Take ownership of electrical and controls performance from problem identification through resolution.
- Partner closely with maintenance trades and operations to implement solutions that are practical and sustainable.
- Support planned shutdowns and provide occasional after-hours escalation support when required.
- Maintain and improve documentation including electrical drawings, backups, device lists, and change records.
- Coordinate with a peer controls specialist to ensure effective coverage during vacations, shutdowns, and critical work.
How We Work
- Cross functional technical team with direct accountability and impact
- Close daily collaboration with operations and maintenance
- Mixture of planned improvement work and reactive troubleshooting
- Strong emphasis on follow through, stability, and execution.
- Leadership support for addressing root causes and improving systems.
Required Qualifications
- Diploma or degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Automation, or a related field
- Strong hands-on experience troubleshooting industrial electrical and controls systems.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize effectively, and deliver results without constant direction.
- Comfort serving as an escalation resource during challenging operational situations.
- Clear and effective communication with trades, operators, and engineering peers
Preferred Experience
- Experience supporting continuous manufacturing operations.
- Familiarity with industrial networks and basic OT infrastructure
- Experience executing shutdown work and stabilizing systems after startup.
- Demonstrated history of improving reliability, standards, and documentation.
What We Offer
- Competitive compensation aligned with manufacturing automation and controls roles.
- Direct and visible impact on plant safety, reliability, and operational performance.
- The opportunity to grow into broad end to end ownership of automation systems, including PLC and HMI architecture, electrical and controls infrastructure, and integration with plant IT and OT environments.
